History of the Woods Riders
Have you ever wondered how NCWR came to be? Well, I have and decided to look into it. Recently, I reached out to lifetime member Doug Hammes to get to the bottom of our club's origins. Here's what I learned.
According to Doug, Stan Stanton and Pete Pritchard, the idea of a club started back in 1977 because they wanted their own club's name on their Enduro entries and result sheets.
The original name WNCDR (Western Nevada County Dirt Riders) was deemed too long so a short time later was shortened to NCWR. The club logo was created around 1990 by Doug's late neighbor, Charlie Hayward, a creative graphic artist who was retired from Hot Rod Magazine. He took the shape of Nevada County and merged it with a Husky and the rest is history. His design fee was 2 NCWR jerseys.
Doug didn't state if he was the club's first president but did say he was "in charge" so I'll assume he was the Prez. He felt that he couldn't give the club the attention it deserved so Harry Abbott stepped up and became the president in 1990 and secured both D36 and AMA charters.
